Is Nectar Canvass a legit survey site?

Yes, Nectar Canvass is a legit survey site. Originally based on a partnership between two reputable companies with a long history, the survey site was first launched as a joint venture between Survey Sampling International (now rebranded Dynata) and the Canadian company Aimia. In 2018 Aimia sold Nectar to the supermarket group Sainsbury’s. Today, Nectar Canvass is managed as a joint venture between Nectar 360 (fully owned by Sainsbury’s) and the market research company Dynata.

Nectar 360 is a “fully integrated loyalty, insights and media services agency”. By collecting survey answers in combination with the shopping data through the use of loyalty cards, they can get a 360 degrees view of the customer journey.

What’s the concept?

The concept is simple: On one side, Nectar invites its members to sign up for Nectar Canvass, On the other side, Dynata operates the panel site. In this way, Nectar Canvass members generate revenue for both Dynata and Nectar 360 every time they complete a survey. A small part of the revenue goes back to the survey taker in the form of Nectar points.

Points earned through Nectar Canvass will be automatically transferred to your main Nectar account (although it can take up to 28 days), where you can use the points to shop online through hundreds of well-known retailers such as Sainsbury’s, Argos, and eBay.

Companies and organizations use this data to gain insights into consumer behaviour and preferences and to inform their marketing strategies.

For example, a typical target group for a consumer survey might be women aged 18-34 who live in urban areas and have an interest in fitness. The survey questions might ask about their preferred workout routines, their preferred brands for athletic apparel, and what motivates them to exercise.

Another example might be a survey targeted at parents of young children, asking about their preferred brands of baby food, diapers, and other childcare products. The survey might also ask about their attitudes towards parenting, their preferred methods of discipline, and their concerns about their children’s development.

Can anyone sign up for Nectar Canvass?

Anyone can sign up for Necar Canvass if they are Nectar loyalty members and have their membership number at hand. Note that you’ll be unable to use your Nectar account login when taking surveys, and instead need to sign up for a new website with your Nectar membership number. The survey site is operated by Dynata, which is a company that serves hundreds of market research buyers all over the world.

This means you will receive surveys from many different companies, and not just surveys on behalf of Nectar or its loyalty partners. This is an important distinction if you are concerned about how your data is handled.

What about my data – are they safe?

Nectar Canvass will monetize and share your survey data anonymously to deliver valuable research to its clients for market research purposes. These clients may use this data to develop and improve products, for example, to track the brand awareness of a consumer brand such as Nike. Personally identifiable data, like your name, email address, and phone number, will be treated as confidential and shared very restrictively. Note that data tracked through your Nectar loyalty card will not be shared through the Canvass panel platform.

How to get started

You need to register on the site to earn money by taking surveys. Then, after you’ve verified your email address and filled in your member profile, you’ll receive five to seven new survey opportunities per week. When you have reached the payment threshold, you can request to redeem your reward (e.g., Nectar points). The website sends regular emails with links to available surveys pre-matched with each member’s profile.

You can complete these surveys at any time. You will be given instructions on how long the surveys will last and how many Nectar points you can earn. Participation is entirely voluntary and will typically involve questions about products and services. The reward for each completed survey is usually relatively low, but you can accumulate a good amount of additional Nectar points if you persistently take surveys over time. Longer surveys typically result in a higher amount of points.

Surveys for Nectar points – how much can I make?

The only way to redeem rewards by taking surveys on Canvass is through Nectar points. The points you earn will depend on the complexity and length of each survey opportunity. We at Huginx have signed up and taken surveys with Nectar Canvass over several weeks to check the rewards levels.

Nectar points per completed survey

First of all, what’s the value of a Nectar point? When spent in-store at Sainsbury’s grocery stores, each Nectar point is usually worth 0.5 pence (so 1000 points equals £5 worth of shopping). After doing close to 50 surveys over a period of 8 weeks, we were rewarded an average of 44 points per survey. From this perspective, we only earned £0.22 per survey on average, which is significantly less than many other survey sites. Having said that, you do get an occasional survey that earns more than 100 points, usually linked to B2B topics.

You get 2 Nectar points when not qualifying

Taking surveys on Nectar Canvass, we qualified for surveys around 1/3 of the time. So in order to qualify for 50 surveys, we had to start answering 150 surveys. This means that 2/3 of your survey attempts are likely to end in a screenout (meaning you’re not qualified). As compensation, you’re awarded 2 Nectar points each time you screen out (which is worth £0.01).

In our example from above, we earned 2 200 points from taking surveys and 200 points from screenouts, altogether 2400 points or £12 (over a period of 8 weeks).

Summary – Pros and Cons

On the positive side, Nectar Canvass is a convenient option for Nectar loyalty members. The site offers Nectar points in exchange for completing surveys, which can be redeemed for rewards such as discounts on groceries and other merchandise. Additionally, there is no minimum payment level, and points are automatically transferred to the user’s account upon completion of each survey.

Another advantage is that the market research company behind Nectar Canvass, Dynata, is a trustworthy and reputable organization that has been in the industry for many years. Users can feel confident that their responses are being used in a responsible and ethical manner.

However, there are some drawbacks to using Nectar Canvass. One of the main concerns is the low compensation offered for completing surveys. While users can earn points that can be redeemed for rewards, the value of each survey is often quite low, making it difficult to earn a significant amount of cash.

Also, Nectar Canvass does not offer cash payments, only Nectar points. This can be limiting for users who may prefer to have cash rewards that they can use in any way they see fit.

Another issue is that users may find the profiling questions asked in each survey to be repetitive and tedious. This can lead to survey fatigue, where users become less engaged and may not provide accurate or thoughtful responses.

Disclosure – How we make money

We built HuginX around our core principles of openness, honesty and transparency. Your trust is of the utmost importance to us, which is why we’ll always be straight-up about how we review sites.

When it comes to running our website, we want to be entirely upfront about how we operate, how we make money, and how we keep the site a free resource for our millions of visitors. We don’t accept payment to provide positive reviews, and providers will never have a say in how we choose the best sites. Our aim is to put you, the reader, first and foremost at all times.

A list of practices we never engage in:

  1. We will never accept money to review a product
  2. We will never accept money to change a product review
  3. We will never accept money to turn a blind eye to an issue or flaw
  4. We will never accept money to bias our research or investigations

So, how do we make money? We receive fees from some of the sites we refer subscribers to. These fees are also known as affiliate commissions. When you click on a link or a button that takes you to a provider’s website such as a survey site, we may receive compensation for having referred a new sign-up.

Referral fees are only negotiated after we’ve fully conducted our review, meaning that money plays no factor in the process. Referral fees do not impact our review ratings and recommendations. The compensation we receive may, however, influence how, where, and in what order products appear in our paid search comparison pages, which are separate from our editorial content. These contain ad listings, and can only be accessed via search engine advertisements.
